JEAN (Pipes) CONKLIN is the younger daughter of a railroader. She was a tomboy and her father's sidekick. The two Pipes girls sold nightcrawlers to help pay for their college education, and Jean spent her first 19 years in La Grande, Oregon. Hoping to land a job in a big city, she transferred from her hometown college to Oregon State University, to major in home economics communications. When she became engaged to David Conklin, who wanted to live in rural Oregon, her plans were modified. Jean has been a lifelong east Oregonian, far from the metropolis of her dreams. Her high school teaching career was short lived, but she has continued her interest in communications, having worked in radio, magazine writing, website development, desktop publishing, and now book writing and publishing. At age 55, Jean says, "I think it is wonderful becoming an 'older woman!' " She is fully retired from 27 years of management responsibilities for residential and commercial real estate rentals, and from 20 years as a self-employed interior designer. Her husband of 38 years recently retired as an elementary physical education specialist. Dave was also a teacher activist, working for teacher rights and the improvement of public education. They share a passion for helping the less fortunate here and abroad. The Conklins spend several months every year overseas, sharing God's love with the people of Romania. Their website for Heart for Romania illustrates the work of their non-profit humanitarian aid foundation. Dave and Jean Conklin have two grown daughters, Trista and Tia and son-in-law Dean and they are proud grandparents of three little boys. It can be said that Jean is a "Macintosh addict," her body-clock prefers the nighttime, she is a perfectionist and an optimist, she prefers solitude, and she enjoys "being domestic," RV-ing, writing and traveling. A fearless carpenter / handy woman and a mean typist, Jean also loves to pound the ivories and sing on the church worship team.
